Excellent work by the PR/Commercial guys in getting in a big crowd at a difficult time of year. It goes without saying that the players then did their part by producing our best performance since returning to the pro ranks. A great night.
The marketing was spot on- it focused on the club, it's traditions and the game of ice hockey. No gimmicks.
A point I would like to make and it's been mentioned on another thread, is that Flyers need to be very careful about how they present the match night experience. Other clubs go for the orchestrated stuff and to an extent it works- its get people in and families, some of whom are seduced by the razzmatazz, the music, the clapping, the singing, the comfortable surroundings etc etc- but we're a hockey town.....
Todd said it in his interview- Flyers fans don't need told to make a noise, they react to what's happening on the ice. We 'make some noise' not because someone demands it but rather when we see some hockey related action that stirs us up.
On Saturday, the build up was laborious- it actually killed the atmosphere when the place should have been rocking. Incessant blethering over the tannoy didn't help and this continued throughout the game. There's a place for music and it's usually pretty good at Fife but in the barn it should only be when there is a lull or the game is quiet. On Saturday there were quite a few guys trying to get the old style chants going but it was hard for it to spread during breaks because of the music.
As long as the fans are there, a no frills presentation is what's best in our rink. Less is very much more IMO. The team and the fans feed of each other and nothing else.

Agree, the commercial guys done a great job in getting people through the door with what was probably the biggest promotional push I've seen from the Flyers. Only thing I'd comment on is that the atmosphere was built up, lights went down and then we got around 5-10 mins of figure skating! Now I'm all for given them an opportunity to display their skills but for me it just seemed the wrong occasion for it and slightly muted the crowd. Other than that, great effort by the whole organisation

I would have to agree with you.
The marketing for the game was spot on. I'm at FIA pretty much every game and I couldn't wait for my week to pass just for the game on Saturday. What will be interesting to see is, How many of these new fans are going to be back. I can't see how someone can go to that game and not have one hell of a night.
I've been to Braehead a couple of times and the atmosphere there is very artificial. The cheer when they score (half the time not even loud) and when commanded by the DJ. If Flyers took a good support over to them, we would be louder than them. But I think we play music when its not needed. Especially when the crowd is right into the game.

I agree.
The less music thats played at the start and during the game the better.
An atmosphere at Kirkcaldy is built around whats going on on the ice not what comes from the DJ. Too much music can kill an atmosphere. There was no chance for an atmosphere to build at the start of Saturdays because the music continued right up to the face off.
Lets leave all the glee club stuff to Braehead and the like

I think you guys are over-estimating how much noise would be made if there was no music being played before the game. I think the music should be loud and energetic right up until face off.
I'd even go as far to say as that I thought there were a few occasions on Saturday when the play stopped and the music should have been on but wasn't and it felt it let the energy drop a bit.
The same goes for when the team goes off the ice at the end of the period. They get the applause they deserve without any music which is fair enough but it takes them that long to get to the room these days that they end up walking off in near silence as the applause dies down. I think some energetic music should come on quicker as they go off to keep the players pumped and mask the lull in the noise you get.

The players dont need music at period ends to stay pumped up they go in to calm down fix issues with the system, kit etc generally rest hell even relax a bit. As long as they come out ready to play again after the break thats what matters.
Music is ok for me in part something about the right song as well is key. Agree with what others have said about the intro it just didn't work for me to long and slow. Oh and bringing the players on individually failed for me just didn't seem right, never mind the fact a couple of the guys got missed out altoghether.
At least we are trying to get it right hopefully next week will be a bit better.

I think the music should be loud and energetic right up until face I don't think anyone's saying we shouldn't have music at all and I agree that the few minutes before the team introductions are key. At that time you actually let the music do the work- don't keep punctuating it with cheesy announcing or anything else for that matter. That Muse track they normally play just before the intros start is great build up if its just played uninterrupted and with the lights off. I'm sure the Flyers PR guys are looking to get it spot on- the point being made is that some things may work elsewhere but not in Fife and you maybe need to be switched on to that. Timing is always important and yes generally the music is pretty decent at FIA.

then we got around 5-10 mins of figure skating! REALLY?! OH DEAR! Atmosphere = instantly killed. I go to see a physical game of hockey, not a bunch of panseys skating around the rink half naked waiting for their privates to go blue!

It maybe wasn't great timing, but the reason they were on was because their annual show is on next weekend at the rink, and they're trying to get folks to come along.

Plenty of people making lots of noise for the figure skaters at the end of their routine, didn't spoil my take on the night out i thought they added to the programme and done well.

Period break is more appropriate, not just before the game is due to start! *Just do add, i'm not against Figure Skating or anything, I actually like it. Funnily enough I was watching it this morning before work on EuroSport 2, but there is a time and a place for it and that time is not just before a hockey game when i'll have been consuming alcohol and am ready to see some violence LOL!

Just a matter of timing for me I'm afraid. The ice was cut, light down, ready for the match...then figure skating!
