I recently read an ESPN article on Tampa Bay’s off ice transformation that discussed what comprised value for sports teams, stating that excelling in the following was key for a successful club: Ownership, Coaching, Players, Fan Relations, Affordability, Stadium Experience and Value for Money.
The article got me thinking about how FF would score. It’s been easy to see that there has been a growing fan frustration around the club throughout the EIHL era (which I share) and trying to sum that up in one sentence, there is a feeling that the Fife Flyers ownership does the least in the league to meet the club’s potential.
Probably against popular opinion I am a fan of the on-ice coaching team but I can’t say that the same applies to the off-ice team. So I wondered if we could use this thread to offer some suggestions to improve the club, I do know that they read it. To start I’d offer the following suggestions:
• Fan Engagement – I definitely think that the Social Media aspect has improved throughout the summer and is definitely on the right path but this could go so much further very easily. Honesty and transparency were themes identified post 16-17. More interviews, Q&As with the coaches and owners, without the formulaic questions and more behind the scenes footage would go so far to getting everyone buying in to the product. Basically if we do something good off the ice let’s hear about it
I actually think that there is room so many other ways to get the fans involved, one example would be to allow us to pick the song we come out to (I still get chills when I hear U2's the streets have no name it would be great to have a say in stuff like this(or atleast take it out of the DJ's hands)
Dundee’s 200 Club fundraiser seems like a great idea too and income we are missing out on. Just imagine if we had a fans fundraiser for an enforcer, how much we would have raised!
• E-Commerce – We keep hearing that ownership are calling us a gate based club, well I’d like to see improvements to the website to get the e-turnstile moving and get money in the club throughout the year. As someone who has moved away from Kirkcaldy, I really struggle to pick up any Flyer's related memorabilia or merchandise outside of the odd trips to a game, this was much easier for when it came to Raith Rovers, which led to me spending more money with them, surely this is something we can look at improving.
Anyway, I’m aware the above probably relies on an opening of volunteers and a change in the mentality which may not happen but thought we could suggest a few areas that could help us become a more successful town club, much like Tampa Bay have tried to do, they didn’t do too bad after all and the potential is there after all. If not closer to the Rover’s and Stars levels would certainly help. Interesting to see what ideas everyone has…
