The Stena Line Belfast Giants can confirm that forward Scott Champagne has been released from his contract with the club and will be joining the Sheffield Steelers. Injuries sustained over the Christmas period forced Coach Doug Christiansen and General Manager Todd Kelman to make changes to the lineup and with the mid season additions of Colin Shields, Jeff Mason and Kevin Suarette the Giants currently exceed the EIHL import limit and were forced to release a player.
When asked about Champagne’s departure Christiansen commented: “I would like to thank Scott for his professionalism and work ethic this season. He has done everything I have asked and I know he will have success elsewhere. He is a great teammate and player. I hope 2013 brings him success on and off the ice.”
Champagne may return to the Odyssey as soon as this weekend when the Sheffield Steelers are in town to take on the Giants in a crunch game at the top end of the Elite League standings.
