I would certainly be much happier if we had a Nickerson out there to protect them from any nonsense but it’s not the way of things anymore unfortunately. Troy and Osterberg managed to avoid being roughed up too often and we can only hope it’s the same for our Kazakhs who are only going to get better as they get adjusted to the league and the environment. Must be nice for them to see the Kazakh flag flying in the stands though! Except Nickerson didn’t actually stop guys getting hurt. They might’ve appreciated him looking out for them but guys still got injured on bad hits and cheap shots, and most of his fights were him and another tough guy having a square go, or him randomly attacking someone. Even if someone got hurt and Nickerson battered the guy afterwards, guy was already hurt. As you say, our best players last year mostly managed to look after themselves. Enforcers can be fun and useful but they’re not a deterrent.

Sure he could give out a paggering afterwards but like you say someone was already hurt and after he went after the boy that done it we just ended up shorthanded as well as short benches with an injury. The game has thankfully moved on from when a guy could get a game just cos he was big and scary. I didnae see anyone backing away from anything in preseason. The D was battling hard in front of the net and protecting Owen and forwards were happy to stand up for themselves too.
