I was thinking on Saturday when one of our DJ's (can't remember if it was Smashy or Nicey) was going on about Dundee getting beat by Hull that he may (again) be 'sailing a bit close to the wind' as far as acceptable banter over a PA system goes and it reminded me of something that happened years ago- only problem is, I'm not sure if it did happen and was wondering if anyone who remember the 80'/90's can confirm..? We had a guy who did the announcing for ages around that time, and I think his name was Malcolm(?) Sherris. Brilliant announcer IMO and exactly what you'd want but what I want to know is- did he eventually lose his job (or have to step down) because he criticised a ref over the tannoy during a game?

Is that the guy with the English accent?

I believe there was an announcer who got into trouble and im sure it was he questioned the officials eyesight lol. I also remember , i think it involved one of our bench staff, getting into trouble when he presented the referee with a white stick at the match presentations.

Hibs sacked their announcer for doing something similar: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-20312355Although the Hutchy jibe was amusing, it's not professional and I'd expect some action from the club on the back of it. No need for a sacking - a gentle reminder on conduct would suffice.

Malcolm Sherris to me was the best match night announcer due to his easy to listen to very clear / natural ( English ) accent and not coming across like the current one who seams to be thinking out every word and putting a bit of a showtime glitz on it probably because of the criticism he got at the start but its still way too cheesy for me. I believe Malcolm left over the refusal of a free entry ticket for his wife.

Too many anouncers seem to think THEY are the entertainment at the rinks. They should just stick to making official anouncements and playing tunes. We pay to watch the hockey not listen to them

I never comment as can be seen from my post count but I did think it myself at the rink he was very close to the bone and seems to forget he is representing the club when speaking into the mic and not sitting in the crowd as a fan. Some of his mic banter is cringeworthy. I appreciate he volunteers but has to reign in some of his mic antics.

I don't mind the guy on the mic, maybe because I can hear him clearly, and the music dosen't bother me, I also appreciate he is a volunteer but I did find a couple of comments on Saturday there and saturday past cringeworthy Send them home to think again - in reference to cardiff "No noise from the Caps fans, nothing unusual there" Not gonna slate him though, can only pee with the bits you got and all that ;D

We pay to watch the hockey not listen to them Spot on! I had a family member at the Edinburgh game who hadn't been in 20 years. Talking after the game, he said he enjoyed the hockey but felt the constant chat from the announcer and blaring music took away from the game.
