Tonight we look back through Flyers 81 year history for games played on March 14th.
Season 1939/40
Fife Flyers 6 Falkirk Lions 4 League Scottish Points
It took two late goals to eventually secure the Flyers the points in a hard game. After falling behind to the opening goal Paul Rheault netted twice and Glen Morrison added another to give the home side a comfortable lead. The Lions drew level before Eddie McMillan put Flyers ahead again only to be levelled once more by the visitors. McMillan again and Rheault with his hat trick goal won it for the Flyers.
Season 1948/49
Dundee Tigers 5 Fife Flyers 5 Scottish Cup
A goal by Greger 45 seconds from time gave the Flyers a fortunate point in the opening match of the Scottish Cup. Flyers were ahead 2-1 after the first but then found themselves 5-3 down early in the final period before they stormed back to level. Mann, Scrutton, Snider and Smith were the other Fife scorers.
Season1950/51
Ayr Raiders 8 Fife Flyers 3 National League
The Raiders completely over ran the visiting Flyers who were handed five penalties in the second period during which they lost five goals. It was only when Ayr were under penalty in the final period but ahead 8-1 that the Flyers put another couple of the scoreboard. Al Campone, Archie Williams and Marsh Bentley were the scorers.
Season 1951/52
Ayr Raiders 9 Fife Flyers 4 National League
The Flyers fell behind 4-1 after the first period but batted their way to within a goal as they scored the only two goals of the middle session. It all went horribly wrong in the third however as they were swamped by the home side. Mickey Linell got two with Frank Facto and Hal Kewley one each for the visitors.
Season 1963/64
Fife Flyers 9 Wembley Lions 2 Friendly
Wembley were reported to be under strength with Zamick out with food poisoning, Fildes having had a cartilage operation and Hodgins unable to travel North due to work commitments. Despite the severe weather a crowd of almost 2500 turned up to see what turned out to be a very lopsided game. Flyers iced Gerry Hudson as a guest and they got off to the perfect start after five minutes when Smith scored on a solo rush. Hudson and Spence gave them a comfortable 3-0 first interval lead. Spence got his second before the Lions hit back 60 seconds later before Forbes increased the Flyers lead before the end of the second. Early in the third the Lions scored again but the game was sealed when Spence scored another two, Smith got his second and Lovell also chipped in with a goal.
Season 1970/71
Murrayfield Racers 4 Fife Flyers 5 Northern League
The Flyers avenged the Racers win the previous night in Kirkcaldy and in doing so also ended the Edinburgh sides unbeaten league record. The teams were level at 2-2 going into the third period before the Flyers stretched their lead to 5-3 with the Racers grabbing a late consolation. Les Lovell netted three for Racers with the Flyers Boreham grabbing a double with singles from Crooks, Muir and Law Lovell.
Season 1980/81
Fife Flyers 5 Glasgow Dynamos 2 Northern League
In a game that had a fast flowing opening there was nothing at stake for either side in terms of final league standings. Lynch and Abel had goals in the first two periods but as the third got underway Glasgow quickly equalised. Within the space of a minute Kinmond and Lynch again restored their lead and with five minutes to go Bean Anderson scored the goal of the game. At that point skirmishes broke out all over the ice and Donnie MacLeod pinned Chic Cottrell to the ice as he pounded away leaving the Flyer with blood pouring from his face. Chic was unhappy with how the referee handled the situation and following his protests received a match penalty that would result in a three game ban.
Season 1986/87
Fife Flyers 13 Ayr Bruins 2 Heineken Premier League
The Bruins only trailed 3-2 early in the second period before the Flyers, returning to something like their best form of the season, slammed in ten unanswered goals. Inevitably Stoyanovich and Moria led the way with four and three goals respectively. Doubles from Jack and Sims along with goals from Abel and Kinmond completed the scoring.
Season 1991/92
Slough Jets 10 Fife Flyers 6 Heineken Division One
The Flyers needed a win to clinch the Division One title but their celebrations were postponed by 24 hours as their nearest challengers took the points to disappoint the hordes of Fifers who had travelled hoping to see the silverware clinched. The middle period was their downfall as they allowed the Jets to take a 7-4 lead which they couldn’t make in roads on in the final period. The goals came from Laplante 2, Morris 2, Robertson and Haig. It was on to Lee Valley the following night where the champagne corks would be popped.
Season 1998/99
Peterborough Pirates 5 Fife Flyers 3 BNL Play Off
The Flyers lost their first game in the playoffs in a penalty filled meeting that struggled to get going amongst the many stoppages. The Flyers however all but secured their progress to the finals weekend by keeping the margin of defeat to just the two goals. Frank Morris scored two and Todd Dutiaume a single.
Season 2007/08
Paisley Pirates 3 Fife Flyers 4 SO Northern Premier League
Starting a triple header of games that weekend it was a marathon match in Braehead that had to be settled in a penalty shoot out. Dan McIntyre opened the scoring but the Pirates then rattled in three without reply before the end of the first. Ian Beattie and McIntyre again took the game into overtime but neither side could find a winner. The shoot out was won 3-1 with Lynch, Gunn and Samuel the scorers.
Season 2008/09
Solway Sharks 4 Fife Flyers 3 Celtic Cup
The Flyers had already secured the Celtic Cup but were humbled as they completed their fixtures in the competition. Sharks raced to a 4-0 lead before goals from Jamie Wilson, Steven Lynch and Steven Gunn but it was not enough to save their blushes.
Season 2010/11
Fife Flyers 6 Whitley Warriors 0 Northern League Playoff Final
The League Champion Flyers picked up their 2nd title within seven days as they completely blew the Warriors away with a four goal first period. Coach Dutiaume revealed that his team were a little bit miffed by losing the coin toss to see who would take the home dressing room and came out of the traps flying as a result. Samuel, Scoon, Venters and Gunn were all on target in the first. The Flyers other goals coming from Lynch in the second and McAlpine in the third with Daly recording a 16 save shut out.
Season 2014/15
Fife Flyers 3 Dundee Stars 4 SO EIHL
Fife paid the penalty for another lacklustre showing and this time their excellent record in a shootout could not save them. Backed by a huge travelling contingent the Flyers were up against a Stars side that simply had nothing but pride to play for. It looked positive for Fife when they opened after less than 90 seconds through Fulton. They didn’t get the crucial second goal and Stars took a hold of the match. Auger levelled at 2-2 midway through and Gunn regained the lead for Fife who should but didn’t kick on and the inevitable equaliser came with just over four minutes remaining.
Season 2017/18
Fife Flyers 4 Belfast Giants 8 EIHL
This was the Flyers penultimate home game of the season as both sides battled to secure third place. There was little doubt of the result as early as the first period as the visitors strolled to a 4-0 lead. This was extended to five before Charlie Mosey broke the Fifers duck in the 25th minute. Dan Correale scored a second but Giants added a further two with Shields collecting a hat trick. Peter LeBlanc pulled another back with Gauthier scoring another consolation near the end.
